Simulating the transparent gravitational lens
Abstract
An explanation is given of the difference between the point-mass lens and the transparent lens. In constructing the model, the smooth change in behavior between rays intercepting the galaxy and those passing it in vacuum is shown. The source used in the general experimental set-up is an artificial quasar consisting of a tin can with a 3/32-inch hole drilled in one end and containing a 60-watt light bulb. The results obtained from photographing the source through two gravitational lenses are shown.
