Small oscillations of inviscid incompressible stratified parallel and swirling flows
Abstract
Existence theorems, minimax principles, and comparison theorems are obtained for the real eigenfrequencies of inviscid, incompressible, stratified plane parallel flow and swirling flow. Existence theorems for internal waves with arbitrary axial and azimuthal mode numbers and comparison theorems and minimax principles for the associated eigenfrequencies are obtained. The real eigenfrequencies and the associated modes that occur in stratified plane parallel flow are important in applications of the theory to meteorology and oceanography.
