The electric quadrupole moments of benzene and hexafluorobenzene
Abstract
The molecular quadrupole moments of benzene and hexafluorobenzene have been determined through measurements of birefringence induced in the gases at various temperatures. γ C 6H 6 = -(29.0 ± 1.7) × 10 -40 and γ C 6F 6 = (31.7 ± 1.7) × 10 -40 C m 2.γ C 6H 6 is 55% larger than an estimate obtained from microwave Zeeman measurements on fluorobenzene.
