X-ray observations of NGC 7582 and the Grus Quartet with the EinsteinObservatory.
Abstract
Imaging Proportional Counter observations reveal that three of the galaxies of the Grus Quartet, NGC 7552, 7582 and 7590, are X-ray emitters, with the strongest being the narrow emission line galaxy (NELG) NGC 7582. It is also confirmed, using Monitor Proportional Counter data, that the variable 2A 2315-428 consists essentially of this galaxy only; in whose spectrum evidence is found of a large photoelectric cutoff, with the corresponding galactic column density lying between 5 and 10 x 10 to the 22 nd/sq cm. It is shown that neither the interstellar medium nor the narrow emission line gas of this galaxy are likely to be the main causes of the cutoff. A crucial test to be pursued is time variability in the cutoff.
