An estimate of the peculiar velocities of field galaxies
Abstract
For field galaxies at distances less than 20 Mpc (with a Hubble constant of 75 km/s-Mpc), an estimate is obtained of the root-mean-square of peculiar velocities of 70 + or - 40 km/s. It is shown that for more distant field galaxies the peculiar velocities do not exceed the error inherent in the determination. An attempt is made to allow for the effect of the motion of the Galaxy on the peculiar velocities of field galaxies.
