The luminosity function of carbon stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud
Abstract
The luminosity function of a complete sample of late type carbon stars in the LMC is compared with a luminosity function derived from recent evolutionary models. It appears from this comparison that present stellar evolutionary calculations of thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch stars are inadequate to explain the bulk of the carbon stars.
