Experiments with a long time delay phase-locked loop via the satellite Symphonie
Abstract
A 270 msec delay line which simulates the wave propagation time for a phase locked loop involving two-way transmission between a ground station and a satellite was developed. The loop is intended for a TDMA bit synchronization system. A linear model of a phase control system with time delay is presented. The simulation test and test setup are outlined. Results reveal large phase fluctuation which can degrade loop operation. A field test of the phase locked loop via the Symphonie satellite was organized. The effectiveness of the 270 msec delay line was examined along with the source of phase fluctuation. Results confirm the usefulness of the delay line for simulation while large phase fluctuation is shown to be mainly produced by internal noise from the variable crystal oscillator.
