The future of commercial satellite communications
Abstract
The advent of the Space Shuttle promises an increase of satellite communications systems capabilities. Communications satellites will be built with increased capacity achieved by multiple frequency reuse by means of multiple spot beams. Higher satellite EIRP, receive G/T, and onboard switching will reduce earth station complexity. The current terrestrial transmission system will be expanded into a fully integrated terrestrial/space communications system, providing voice, data, facsimile, and video conferencing services at greatly reduced costs.
