One and two dimensional modeling of the planetary boundary layer
Abstract
One and two dimensional models of the planetary boundary layer were developed. The models are based on the shallow water equations with the turbulent kinetic energy equation as closure law. The one dimensional model is only slightly affected by initial values, but strongly by boundary conditions. The effect of closure laws on the results of the model in case of horizontal homogeneity as well as for highly inhomogeneous surfaces was studied. Two difference methods were compared for the two dimensional model. Temperature profiles obtained by the two dimensional model are extremely well corroborated by the measured values. The importance of orography in the investigation of the boundary layer jet flow is shown.
