RF link analysis and simulation of the Shuttle TACAN System
Abstract
The Space Shuttle on re-entry will use the established technology of the Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN) System for navigation while performing an unpowered landing. The major analysis which have been undertaken to determine the adequacy of the RF links and the simulations being conducted to verify TACAN/Space-Shuttle compatibility are discussed. The analysis and simulations indicated the TACAN system will provide the Shuttle with adequate navigation data even in an operating environment for which the TACAN was not originally designed.
