An 8.5 watt solid-state space-qualified amplifier for satellite communications
Abstract
The results of a program to develop a space-qualified solid-state power amplifier are presented. The amplifier design focuses not only on RF performance specifications, but also producibility and reliability as well. The amplifier is designed to operate in the frequency range 3.7-4.2 GHz, and is tunable over any 200 MHz bandwidth in that range. It is designed for a 10-year mission life, with an end-of-life output power of 8.5 W. The amplifier provides an operating gain of 55 dB and a dc-to-RF efficiency of 33%. It is fully compensated over the temperature range -5 to +40 C.
