System considerations in Intelsat domestic network
Abstract
An analysis is conducted regarding Intelsat's present requirements, taking into account the available and future space segment resources. Thirty-two countries are leasing or planning to request space segment from Intelsat to support their own national telecommunication networks. Two main national services are provided through the Intelsat space segment, including TV and telephony. TV services are usually supported with a bandwidth of 18 or 30 MHz per TV channel per country, but telephony services cover a wide scope in volume and characteristics. Four types of public domestic networks using the Intelsat space segment are listed in a table. The Intelsat network of satellites is deployed along three main arcs above the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. A system model is discussed. It is pointed out that the design for an optimum domestic satellite communication system depends on specific user requirements.
