The development of a fundamental understanding of the counter flow method of the superconducting power transmission line (SPTL) cool down is reported. It is emphasized that the analytical, numerical, and experiments results accurately model the cool down of full scale SPTL's. The cable permeability measurements indicate that any significant rupture of the lead gas barrier of the cable will lead to an unacceptable high leak rate from the pressurized core.
