Conditions for generating coherent radiation using resonant parametric four-wave processes in gaseous media
Abstract
Frequency conversion using resonant parametric four-wave processes in gaseous media is examined. Attention is given to: (1) constraints on pumping intensity and choice of atomic concentrations associated with one- and two-photon processes and wave synchronization conditions; (2) formulas for determining the limiting values of the conversion coefficient; and (3) a method for choosing nonlinear materials for frequency conversion. Two examples are examined: (1) the frequency conversion of He-Ne laser radiation at 3.39 microns into the UV range in sodium vapor and (2) the frequency conversion of IR radiation from a CO2 laser into the visible range in cesium vapor.
