Hydrodynamic impact loads with SURGE
Abstract
The SURGE computer code was modified to calculate the transient hydrodynamic impact of a long rigid cylinder on a large water pool. The SURGE code is based on the GALE method, a numerical algorithm that solves a finite difference representation of the equations governing an incompressible, inviscid fluid. The fluid structure impact problem is inherently complex and difficult to treat mathematically. Certain discrepancies are identified that limit the range of engineering applications of SURGE.
