Advanced plug nosetip nuclear instrumentation
Abstract
A nosetip instrumentation system based on a series of CdTe radiation sensors with hydridized preamplifiers has been designed and successfully tested in flight. The goals of the new design are: (1) measure the forces acting on the nosetip during reentry; (2) measure the recession and shape change of the plug during reentry; (3) measure the transition onset time and the transition front progression within the plug sphere-cone sonic circle; and (4) provide diagnostic temperature and vibration measurements on the reentry vehicle afterbody.
