A new predictor design for DPCM coding of TV signals
Abstract
Previous work on the optimization of predictors for Differential Pulse Code Modulation (DPCM) of television signals has been carried out without considerations of the interaction between quantizer and predictor. A new method of predictor design is presented which improves the dynamic features of a DPCM coder. The main characteristic of the new predictors is that only positive coefficients are used. Such a predictor in conjunction with a given quantizer produces less visible quantization noise than a predictor which minimizes the variance of the prediction error. This has been verified by computer simulations and subjective testing.
