Deep space mission: Review and outlook
Abstract
Deep space missions conducted during the 1970's are reviewed and compared. Data transmission rates and accuracy in position determination are emphasized. The Deep Space Network is briefly described. Missions discussed include Helios, Pioneer, Viking, Pioneer Venus, and Voyager 1 and 2. Missions planned for the 1980's are considered. These are Galileo, the International Solar Polar Mission, and Giotto (Comet Halley Flyby). The potential for interstellar missions is also discussed.
