Solid state angular rate sensor /Vyro/
Abstract
The paper describes solid state angular rate sensors used in the inner stabilization loop of aircraft and missile automatic flight control systems. Spinning-wheel rate gyros have been used to supply this function, but they have many precision parts affecting life and reliability; a solid state angular rate sensor containing no rotating parts is now in quantity production for the A-10 aircraft. This sensor, called a Vyro, has no known life limitation and a reliability of 127,000 MTBF, nearly an order of magnitude improvement over conventional rate gyros.
