Variable wiggler optimization
Abstract
An optimization calculation for wiggler systems to be used in low gain free electron lasers is reported. The variation of the laser field strength with distance due to diffraction spreading is taken into account. A description of a free-electron laser experiment is given, and transverse effects due to finite emittance and variation of wiggler field with off-axis position are estimated. On the basis of numerical simulation, including energy spread and transverse effects, it is concluded that the experiment should produce an energy extraction efficiency of 5.3%.
