Enhanced energy extraction in free-electron lasers by means of adiabatic decrease of resonant energy
Abstract
It is shown how the method of moving buckets can be applied to the design of free-electron laser single pass oscillators and amplifiers with enhanced efficiency. Neglecting the potential for further improvement from energy recovery, efficiencies in the 10-20% range for high peak power applications appear to be possible. In this paper attention is given to elementary wiggler design concepts; numerical simulation, detrapping, and phase area displacement effects; canonical oscillator design; and amplification.
