Instrument pointing subsystem development status
Abstract
The physical and performance characteristics of the Spacelab instrument pointing system (IPS) are described. Attention is given to the gimbal system comprising three bearing/drive units and to the control system design. The design contains a fast loop based on a gyro package with four gyros and two accelerometer packages and a slow loop that provides drift and attitude correction. Also considered are the IPS hardware and software including the stellar, solar and earth pointing modes.
