Solar input and solar energy resources
Abstract
Systems theory is applied to the determination of the absolute solar energy input at a given location. A method is proposed for absolute input determination based on the measurement of state variables of solar radiation, so that measurements may be applicable to any type of solar energy conversion system. Solar input is treated as a stochastic signal, with processing designed to evaluate the instantaneous and mean luminances, their variance and correlations, which take into account parameters such as mean cloud size and prevailing wind. Shape classification and recognition methods are used to provide a framework within which different types of measurements may be compared. Experimental results have been obtained for the Saint-Jerome station.
