Thermal marking
Abstract
A new concept for missile guidance, thermal marking, is investigated theoretically. This concept involves irradiating a tank or other armored equipment to form a hot spot onto which the missile seeker can lock. After the laser has been shut off, the missile can continue its lockon, thus providing fire-and-forget capability. The effects of laser power, angle of incidence, atmospheric conditions, irradiation time of the laser, and wavelength of the seeker window on the maximum available range and 'forget times' are examined.
