The prediction of the flow and heat transfer in the vicinity of a jet in crossflow
Abstract
A procedure for solving the fully-elliptic time averaged Navier-Stokes equations describing turbulent flow is applied to the calculation of the flow and heat transfer arising from the injection of fluid through a wall into a cross-flowing mainstream. The solutions include the use of the numerical procedure to calculate the distortion of the flow within the injection hold, iteration being carried out between this calculation and that of the external flow in order to obtain converged solutions of flow-field. Predictions are presented for injection from a single normal hole at jet to mainstream mass-flux ratios between 0.24 and 2.3. At these conditions the distortion of the flow within the hole is found to have a significant effect on the predicted results. The agreement between the predicted results and experimental data is encouraging.
