Supercavitating cavity observations by means of laser velocimeter
Abstract
Supercavitation and cavitation were observed in two-dimensional subcritical flow around a cylinder with and without ventilation. The assumption of 'smooth separation' is not satisfactory since supercavitating flow usually detaches abruptly from the separation point; a transient region was noted where a kind of supercavitation and subcavitation were alternately observed. The flow features outside the immediate vicinity of the separation point are expressed by cavitation numbers based on cavity pressure both with and without ventilation; in the vicinity of the separation point, differential features due to ventilation are found.
