Electron beam parameters in a free-electron laser in the strong saturation regime
Abstract
The strong saturation regime of a free-electron laser is marked by stationary modulation of the electron beam and a stationary electron energy distribution; this leads to a cessation of energy exchange between the beam and the electromagnetic wave. A theoretical analysis is presented of the bunching of a monoenergetic relativistic electron beam in a free-electron laser in the strong saturation regime. Phase and velocity electron distribution functions are obtained, and the total energy transferred from the beam to the electromagnetic wave is determined.
