Stark broadening of atomic spectral lines in a field of multimode laser radiation
Abstract
The Stark broadening of atomic spectral lines by nonmonochromatic laser radiation is studied with consideration of the finiteness of longitudinal laser modes. An analytic expression is obtained for the shape of the absorption line. The line shape depends strongly on the number of modes, and the relation among the intermode beat frequency, the natural width of the atomic transition, and the mean Stark shift of the atomic level. Attention is given to the conditions under which the mean Stark shift in a multimode field can be observed directly on the basis of the shift of the atomic transition line.
