Nonlinear refraction of solitons
Abstract
A geometrical-optics approach is used to investigate the nonlinear evolution of solitons with nonplanar fronts. The general solutions that are obtained describe the self-refraction and, in particular, the self-focusing of solitons in media with arbitrary nonlinearity and dispersion characteristics. The asymptotic soliton behavior associated with nonadiabatic conditions is investigated.
