A guide to the thermal and mechanical characteristics of refractory lining materials
Abstract
This Data Item is available as part of the ESDU Sub-series on Heat Transfer. Background information and guidance on factors important in the selection, arrangement, and mechanical support of refractory lining systems is provided. The information given assists with specification writing and tender preparation and appraisal of refractory lining systems for high temperature processes including metal treatment, chemical and petro-chemical processing, glass and pottery manufacture, steam supply, heat exchange and venting of high temperature exhaust gases. The data provided include mechanical and thermal properties of a range of refractories, ceramic fibers and back-up insulation as well as the applicability of fixing and mechanical support systems. Guidance is given on the interpretation of test data and manufacturers' data. Lists of sources of more detailed information on test methods, manufacturers names, and their product trade names are also included.
