Severe ionospheric scintillations associated with geomagnetic storm on March 22, 1979
Abstract
Severe scintillations observed in the radio signals of several geostationary satellites in association with the geomagnetic storm of March 22, 1979 are examined. Scintillation occurred on frequencies from the VHF through the SHF band. Ionograms from ionosonde stations in Japan show spread-F echoes and an anomalous vertical displacement of the F layer at about the same time as scintillations occurred. Spread-F echoes tended to be associated with a downward displacement of the F layer. Observations suggest that the disturbed region occurred in a limited area in middle latitudes and subsequently moved north with decreasing speed.
