Modulation of electromagnetic waves in a distributed IMPATT diode
Abstract
The modulation of an electromagnetic wave in a distributed IMPATT-diode (DIMPATT-diode) is studied in a linear approximation. The modulation is induced by the time variation of the current supply density and results from a strong dependence of wave increment damping in the diode on the direct current density. A microwave signal in IMPATT can be amplified and has a much larger modulation depth than the current supply due to the negative dynamic conductivity of the p-n transition.
