The transition to Taylor vortices in a closed rapidly rotating cylindrical annulus
Abstract
The effects of the end walls on the flow in a rapidly rotating cylindrical annulus are considered. When the difference in the angular velocities of the cylindrical walls is small the flow is described in terms of Ekman layers and vertical shear layers but for larger values the Ekman layers are nonlinear and a flow pattern corresponding to Taylor vortices may be resonated.
