The Stratigraphy of the Lincolnshire Limestone Formation (Bajocian) in Lincolnshire and Rutland (Leicestershire)
Abstract
A new lithostratigraphy is described for the Lincolnshire Limestone Formation (Middle Jurassic) in Lincolnshire and Rutland (Leicestershire). Fundamental to the scheme are two horizons, the bases of the Lincoln and Sleaford Members, which permit county-wide correlation and the subdivision of the formation into three informal units: lower, middle and upper Lincolnshire Limestone. A re-assessment of the earlier ammonite finds and some new discoveries suggest that these two lithostratigraphic boundaries may also be important biostratigraphic divides, which for the first time, provide a viable biostratigraphic framework for the formation. Essentially the two horizons separate ammonite faunas, which are representative of the discites Zone, and of the ovalis and laeviuscula Subzones of the laeviuscula Zone (Lower Bajocian). Within this tripartite scheme further lithostratigraphic subdivision is possible and nine formal members are recognised in all; each is described and related to the stratigraphies of earlier workers. A correlation with the somewhat dissimilar Lincolnshire Limestone sequences of South Humberside is also proposed.
