Observations of ultraviolet radiation scattered by dust around lam Ori.
Abstract
Ultraviolet radiation scattered by dust around Alpha Orionis has been detected by the S2/68 ultraviolet sky-survey telescope in four wave-bands centred on 2740, 2350, 1950 and 1550 A. The scattering properties of the dust have been obtained by comparing the observations with the predictions of a multiple scattering model based on the Monte Carlo method. The observations are best represented by grains with a moderately forward-throwing phase function and a low albedo shortward of 2500 A.
