Trace elements in acantharian skeletons1
Abstract
The celestite (SrSO4) skeletons of acantharians may be an important transport vector for several trace metals, extracting them from surface water and releasing them at the depth of the oxygen minimum‑nutrient maximum. Iron and lead seem to be incorporated as particles while copper and zinc may be lattice cations in the celestite. Removal rates from the surface water are estimated to be 40, 92, 39, and 34 ng · cm−2 · yr −1 for Cu, Fe, Zn, and Pb.
