Satellite electronic components reliability assurance
Abstract
About a hundred different kinds of electronic components are utilized for communication satellite transponders. This paper describes guiding principles to assure component reliability. The three major principles are: (1) the selection of components with a good utilization history on land or in space, (2) minimization of different component types by standardization and (3) power derating. Some results of reliability studies on newly developed semiconductor devices, discrete passive components and hybrid integrated circuits are also described. Specific reliability improvements have been made for these electronic components by renewal of material, structure, manufacturing processes and by final screening processes.
