Satellites we have known and loved - a synopsis of the scientific results to date.
Abstract
The paper reviews the results obtained with the Ariel 3 and 4, GEOS 1, ISEE, Ariel 5 and Cos B satellites, noting that these spacecraft have led to an improved understanding of wave-particle interactions in the magnetosphere. Attention is given to those experiments concerning the lower atmosphere on Ariel 4, GEOS, and ISEE as well as the ionosphere/magnetosphere on Ariel 3. In addition, an outline of the structure of the magnetosphere is given in order to make the new results more comprehensible. Finally, results from Ariel 5 and Cos-B which are dedicated to X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy, respectively, are surveyed.
