Astigmatic pencils of rays reconstructed from holograms
Abstract
The pencils of rays obtained as reconstructions of holographically recorded spherical waves or point sources are theoretically and experimentally investigated. The phase of a reconstructed pencil of rays is developed progressively, beginning with the direction of propagation, followed by the astigmatic focal properties. General results, including changes of geometry and wavelength between recording and reconstruction, are derived for the primary and the conjugate wavefields. Numerical examples are discussed and compared with experimental results. The reported approach treats the aberrations for each pencil of rays independently, rather than looking at the hologram as an imaging system with a fixed optical axis. The results are therefore especially suitable to analyse the properties of holographic lenses, e.g. used as couplers in fibre optical systems.
