Analysis and design of tracking filters
Abstract
The analysis and design of linear tracking filters suitable in applications requiring tight bandwidth control for improved signal-to-noise ratio are presented. The filter transfer function is considered, on the basis of which the small-signal transient responses are predicted. The design of 'high-Q' tracking filters is very similar to the design of phase-locked loops, and the procedure is outlined, stressing that it is not restricted to any particular form of bandpass filter or loop filter. In determining the time-domain response of the filter, the results of phase-locked loop analysis are used whenever possible. The experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions, showing good agreement.
