Tokamaks
Abstract
The historical background and current status of tokamak research are reviewed. Tokamak design features are described and constraints on maximum plasma pressure imposed by plasma-column equilibrium conditions are considered. Results are presented on the principal macroscopic instabilities in tokamak plasmas: disruptive instability, internal relaxation oscillations, tearing instabilities, and resistive kink modes. Auxiliary methods of plasma heating (including heating with fast neutral beams) are examined, and attention is given to the basic energy loss mechanisms, including electron and ion heat conduction, plasma diffusion, and radiative losses on impurities.
