Infrared spectroscopy of molecules in circumstellar material
Abstract
High resolution spectra of red giants and long period variables exhibit lines of infrared CO vibration-rotation bands in circumstellar material. In the few such stars so far observed at very high resolution, the circumstellar material appears localized in 3 distinct regimes with temperatures of 800 K, 200 K and 75 K and expansion velocities of 0, 10 and 16 km/s rather than being uniformly distributed.
