The diffusion of a passive contaminant in a distorted turbulent flow
Abstract
The behavior of a thermal wake from a linear heat source acting as a passive contaminant in the presence of grid-generated turbulence subjected to a planar distortion is investigated. For a heat source placed perpendicular to the flow direction upstream of a deformation to the ducted flow, the principal axes of which are perpendicular to the flow direction, measurements of flow temperature reveal a Gaussian temperature distribution along the axis of the channel, as in the case of nondistorted flow. Expressions for the heat flux through the cross section of the thermal wake are then derived as a function of distance from the source.
