The modification of the equipotential surfaces of binary systems due to the radiation pressure of its components
Abstract
Consideration is given to the effects of the radiation pressure from both components of a binary star on the force field which would be felt by a gas distributed around the system for the case when both stars are very luminous. The radiation field is assumed to be isotropic and the ratio of radiative and gravitational acceleration experienced by a massless particle to be independent of the position of the particle, allowing the problem to be formulated as a special case of the restricted three-body problem. Hill curves are presented for the situations when the more massive star or the less massive star is more luminous, and conditions for stellar mass transfer are obtained.
