Scanner studies of composite spectra I. Dwarfs.
Abstract
Results of a program of scanner observations of the composite spectra of predominantly visual binary stars believed to be dwarfs are reported. Observations at wavelengths from 3500 to 4400 A were obtained with a dual-channel low-resolution scanner. The spectral line and continuum indices determined for standard MK stars of types O through G and luminosity classes IV and V were then used to synthesize composite spectra with which the observational data were compared in order to determine the magnitude difference and two spectral types of each program object. It is found that for normal stars, where the magnitude difference is less than 1.8 and the spectral types are not too similar, the present procedure results in type and magnitude estimates as good as those provided by any other method, and may be used to place constraints upon the type of the fainter star when that of the brighter member is known.
