The optical properties of the unusual galaxy Markarian 348.
Abstract
The Type 2 Seyfert galaxy Markarian 348 has been found by several observers to have an unusually large and massive halo of neutral hydrogen. The H I mass/optical luminosity is more than 10 times larger than average for galaxies of similar morphology, but the outer optical structure, as evidenced by the magnitude-aperture relation, and the galaxy colors are normal for galaxies of this type. The relationship between the H I cloud and the galaxy's nuclear activity is discussed.
