Observations with the 6-m telescope of galaxies with ultraviolet continuum of Seyfert type.
Abstract
The results of a spectroscopic investigation of 36 galaxies are given. The objects for observation were selected from the lists IV-XI of galaxies with ultraviolet continua. The objects were previously found to have anomalous ratios of emission line intensities, diffuse and broadened lines, or contradictory characterization as to their Seyfert nature. The investigation shows that 32 have Seyfert nature: nine of type 1, twenty of type 2, and three of intermediate type 1.5. The statistics of Seyfert type objects show that objects of type 1 and 2 are encountered equally often. However, the luminosity of the type 2 objects frequently have smaller ultraviolet excesses and are therefore not readily detected. There must in fact be many more objects of type 2 than type 1.
