Analysis of shapes of CA II and MG II emission cores in late type stars.
Abstract
An analysis of calibrated profiles of Ca II H and K emissions for 70 F, G, K, and M type stars indicates that Wilson's parameters Wzero (the full width at half maximum intensity corrected for instrumental broadening) and IK (the intensity of K reversal) are accurate measures of full width at half-maximum and of emission core intensity. The peak separation decreases, but the width at the base of emission increases with strength of emission and chromospheric activity. A new expression is derived for the Mg II lines which is linear over a wide range of Mv parameters and is similar to the Wilson's equation for Ca II lines.
