Narrowband polarimetry of southern red long-period variables.
Abstract
Narrowband linear polarization observations are reported for four Mira variables and the semiregular variable L2 Pup. The polarization has been observed to change, across at least one of the two TiO bands studied, in R Car, R Cen, S Lep, and L2 Pup. This is most likely due to the variation of the source function and the ratio of absorption to scattering as a function of optical depth in the stellar photosphere. In L2 Pup the polarization also varies across the Ca I 4226-A line, indicating that Ca I is unevenly distributed across the stellar surface.
