The decreasing period of EM Cygni.
Abstract
Recent observed timings of the moments of minima of the double-lined, eclipsing, cataclysmic variable EM Cygni are discussed which confirm that the orbital period is currently decreasing. The timescale for the period change is calculated to be 5.5 million years, and on the assumption that all the mass is accreted onto the blue star, the rate of mass transfer is determined to be on the order of 2 x 10 to the -7th solar mass per year.
